Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Cleaning Tasks

Every household is different.  Depending on the number and age of the members of your household, the size of your home, and whether or not you have pets, you may clean once a day, once a week, or once a month.  Either way, there are certain tasks that you likely complete more often than others.

If you’re trying to make a cleaning schedule, here’s a quick rundown of average household tasks and about how often you should be completing them.

Dishes

Frequency: Daily

Even if it’s just tossing the dishes into the dishwasher, you probably want to make sure that the dishes are taken care of before your head hits the pillow.

Light Kitchen Duty

Frequency: Daily

While you definitely don’t have to do a full kitchen deep clean every day, it’s a great idea to wipe down the counters and pick up any spills on the stove before they become cement.

Normal Pickup

Frequency: Daily

If you have children, or child, or just a husband who seems to leave a breadcrumb trail of tools across the house, you probably do some quick pickups a few times a day.  Make sure that your home has the basic backbone of organization so that everything has a place.  Those quick pickups are much more bearable when you aren’t searching for a home for something.

Laundry

Frequency: Weekly (Or a few times a week.)

I have a hate/hate relationship with laundry.  As in, I hate doing laundry, but I also hate seeing it piled up in Kilimanjaro size mountains around my house.  Having one laundry day a week is great if that works for your family size, but don’t be discouraged if you find that you need to do laundry a few times a week.  It may seem like a pain, but it really does take a lot less time to fold and put away one load of laundry than it does 3 loads of laundry.

Dusting

Frequency: Weekly

Surface dusting should be done every week, but make sure you are also combining this with thorough deep dusting jobs at least once a quarter.

Bathrooms

Frequency: Weekly

Your tub, toilet, and shower should be scrubbed down once a week.  If you are prone to countertop hairspray buildup, you should probably do a quick wipe of your countertops a few times a week, but it’s fine to clean counters once a week as well.

Windows

Frequency: Monthly

Cleaning windows doesn’t have to be difficult.  Wipe the glass and frame with a rag damp with vinegar and water, and then buff with a microfiber to remove any streaks.

Vacuuming

Frequency: Weekly (Or a few times a week depending on how many small children and/or pets you have in your family.)

Vacuuming is one of those sweetly satisfying chores, and since it’s pointless to vacuum the floor if you haven’t dusted, it gives you that sense of accomplishment since it’s normally the final task on your to do list.  Depending on your pet hair situation, it’s a good idea to vacuum your upholstery at least once a month.
